Dynamic Positioning System
In water depths greater than about 200 m, anchoring becomes less effective as a means of maintaining the position of a drilling vessel. In these deeper waters, Dynamic Positioning (DP) is required. DOSECC has acquired a portable DP system with funding from the National Science Foundation and the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program. This unit is intended to be able to convert vessels of opportunity into drilling platforms. The system consists of four thrusters powered by four dieselhydraulic power packs. The system is controlled by a Nautronix JSDP5000 (DP-1 class) system that uses either a GPS signal or a seabed beacon for position keeping. The specifications of this system are provided in the following table.

Active Heave Compensated Drilling System
 DOSECC's AHC-800 is an active heave compensated (AHC) coring rig that is capable of retrieving continuous core to depths of 800 m (water + sediment) in shallow marine and deep lacustrine environments. The system is modular and designed to fit on a variety of drilling platforms. The AHC-800 is designed to compensate for up to 8 feet of heave with a period of 8 seconds.
The AHC-800 uses a set of proven sampling tools that include:
- Shelby "push" tube
- Hydraulic Piston core (HPC)
- Extended Shoe, non-rotating
- Extended Core Bit, rotating ("The Alien")
- Diamond Core Bit (mining)
- Non-Sampling Assembly
The tools core a hole 5.50 inches (139.7 mm) in diameter. Most are designed to collect core within a plastic liner with an inner diameter.

The newest addition to our fleet of drilling rigs, the CS4002 is an all-hydraulic diamond core drill for deep hole surface exploration drilling. It is ideally suited for drilling projects where high penetration rate and optimal core recovery are the main goals. The CS4002 has depth capacities for vertical, straight, water-filled boreholes of 8,030 feet with NQ string, 5,250 feet with HQ, and 3,440 feet with PQ.
